I raced back to my room for some much needed privacy. After checking all the nooks and crannies to ensure I was alone, I started in with Elaine.

“If the Chateau has one secret passage, it probably has more. Any chance you can hunt down a floor plan, or even overhead images?”

“I’ll see what I can do. How far do you think Sheila Polk is going to take this?”

I exhaled all the way from the pit of my stomach. “As far she needs to. She’s declared herself queen, and the fate of the kingdom gets decided this weekend. We need to find out who her rivals are. I noticed there was no one in green in that room, so she isn’t in cahoots with the Dame of the Moon.”

“Or blue,” Elaine added.

“Who sports blue again?”

“It’s the Wythanes, the renegade house. They were exiled—”

“What actor?”

“Sven Hammersmith.”

Who had the protein bar wrapper in his trash. The same type of bar present in the Blackguard operations rooms. “So Hammersmith has blue and black. Polk has red and white. But Polk isn’t on the show. On the show, red and white are controlled by Dever, right?”

“Right.”

“So far, Dever looks to be staying out of this. As far as the Dame of the Moon, who knows? She has spies in green everywhere, but they’ve just been watching from the sidelines.”

All the moving parts were giving me a headache. The mini-fridge was stocked. Remembering the room was registered under Will Norman, I helped myself to a seven-dollar bottle of water. Elaine piped up before I was finished.

“I’m going through the recording of Polk’s instructions now. The red team was given instructions on how to monitor the doors. They are to log and search each guest before allowing them to leave. Also, they are to prevent anyone from entering the hotel and contact Polk immediately if anyone attempts to force their way in. That includes the police.”

“She’s playing chicken with the cops. They want to prevent the situation from escalating. Polk is risking a full-blown hostage situation on the gamble the authorities want to keep this quiet. But it’s only a matter of time before it breaks on social media.”

Elaine had the answer ready. “About that. The yellow team includes engineers and tech types. Polk ordered them to disable the alarms and firewall the routers to limit internet access. She’s blocking all social media and email access.”

I enjoyed a bag of cashews at Will Norman’s expense. Speaking of Norman, he was still in the building, blissfully unaware a coup was taking place. Elaine took advantage of my full mouth.

“What do you think Reynard was planning that required his lawyer present?”

“If it was adjacent to what constituted a living will, maybe crowning his successor.” My mind flashed back to the contents of Reynard’s closet. “Reynard brought two baby crowns with him. One masculine, one feminine.”

“Oh. Well, on the show, the king has one legitimate heir. But there are rumors that the king also sired an illegitimate child first. No one knows who it is, only that it was a girl.
